On Sight Unseen

When saying something is so doesn’t make it so…
I’ve see this come up a few times on my timeline. I’m not sure the origin of the photo but I do know the origin of the list. It originally comes from an article entitled Facism Anyone? by Laurence Britt (http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=library&page=britt_23_2). Here’s the problem — as best I can tell, this article and the list were written in the context of a political fictional novel where the US becomes a fascist state. Aside from the obvious observational bias, there’s a few glaring problems with the list itself. For instance, true Fascism tends to be either opposed to or indifferent to religion; they are not intertwined. Corporate power is not protected either — key industries are typically nationalized. Rather than imagining something that isn’t, can we not focus on the issues at hand?
ps. Two items on the list were missed:
- rampant sexism
- fraudulent elections
